Jimmy Kimmel - Master Fly Angler!

If you are a late night television fan and a fly fisherperson - you will get a kick out of this!  The next time you are up late tying flies watching Jimmy Kimmel, you will think differently of the man behind the desk of the interviews and jokes.  Who knew Jimmy Kimmel was a fly fisherman!

"The Jimmy Kimmel Live host and M.C. of this September’s Primetime Emmy Awards retreats to the rivers of Rocky Mountain states Montana and Idaho for some fly-fishing when he gets time off. From bunking with Huey Lewis to his trusty PowerSquid adapter, he shares his favorites from his trips to the American West.
To get away from it all, I go . . . Fly-fishing in Montana, Idaho, or anywhere trout are hungry.
My favorite way to travel there is . . . I travel exclusively by jet pack.
My ideal travel companions are . . . Some combination of my brother Jon, my cousin Sal, my son Kevin, my band leader Cleto, his dad Cleto Sr., and/or my chef friends Chris Bianco and Adam Perry Lang.
My favorite travel pastimes are . . . I read, play Scrabble, and do crossword puzzles on my iPad. Eventually, the iPad will replace everything, including us. My favorite cocktail is a vodka gimlet on the rocks.
My favorite place to stay is . . . We stay at Huey Lewis’s house in Montana. He wakes everyone up with a duck call.
Upon arrival, I most look forward to . . . Because of the show, I am forced to read current-events-related Web crap from morning until night. The opportunity to read a book just for fun is a great luxury for me.
To stay in shape, my on-the-go fitness regime is . . . Ha! That’s funny.
My suitcase must absolutely contain . . . Hotels never have enough power outlets for my electronics, so I carry a PowerSquid outlet multiplier wherever I go.
When it comes to luggage, I’m an . . . Overpacker.
When I’m in the mood for some retail therapy, I visit . . . Whenever I fish, I stop at the local fly shop whether I need something or not. I always buy a hat with the shop’s logo on it.
When I’m in the mood for room service, my favorite order is . . . I am not a big fan of room service. The metal tray covers make hot food soggy and it is uncomfortable to watch someone set a table while I look on wearing only underpants.
My favorite local place to indulge in a delicious meal is . . . There aren’t many four-star restaurants on the river, but I had a great breakfast this month at the Stanley Baking Company in Stanley, Idaho. It is a special treat to find a great meal where you don’t expect it.
When I’m in the mood to paint the town red, I go to . . . We get up early to fish, so I don’t do much painting.
Upon departing, I am most happy to leave behind . . . E-mails. I get 300 to 400 e-mails a day. I hate them and silently curse those who send them to me while I am on vacation."

Well, it's Monday and there is never a lack of folks that need a little distraction at work from a weekend of fishing.  Hopefully this will satisfy your appetite until Saturday.  Don't forget, even fishing guides get a bad case of the Mondays.

Most folks don't know about Bull Trout, their aggression and the areas they live.  They are a special gem that not many people know about.  And that is ok to us!  Enjoy!

Are you a Mayfly Maniac?

"The State of Minnesota has been experiencing its worst mayfly season in a decade, or best if you are a fly fisherman! On one local highway, the four-inch-deep carpet of flies actually caused an accident, when a car slid on a mayfly slick and careened into another vehicle. A nearby town had to send out plows to shovel the bugs off the road." What if the South Fork had mayfly hatches like this? Do you think the fish would eat them?

Best Fly Fishing Books for Beginners!

We often receive the question: "I am new to fly fishing, do you have a book that you recommend?"  You are in luck, yes we do.  The Curtis Creek Manifesto, published in 1978, was the first book that my father gave me when I became interested in fly fishing as a young boy.  It is easy to read, entertaining, and technically accurate.  This is a must for any angler, beginner or expert.  I still have my original copy, 15 years later, that I reference from time to time.  You should see my Curtis Creek Sneak!  You have to have the book though!

Need something more technical?  The Orvis Fly Fishing Guide will fits perfectly into any anglers library.  Recently updated, the author, Tom Rosenbauer, most likely did not set out to createmust have not have create the bible of Fly Fishing.  However, he did.  Great illustrations, diagrams and pictures make this book a must-have resource.

Click the links if you are interested in purchasing either of these books from our WCA Online Store!!!  You won't be disappointed!

Pint Glass with a Trout Twist!

Livingston, Montana resident trout bum and artist, Derek DeYoung, really hit a home run with his new series of trout pint glasses.  We all love beer, we all love to fish, and when you combine the two, it's a trophy catch.  It is without a doubt, every angler, trout bum, or person that even dreams about fishing needs one of these pint glasses.

I've bought two, they are located in my freezer and ready for a cold brew when I get home.  You should do the same.  If you can't purchase one at our shop - you can get one through our Online Store.  Your beer with thank you!

You should probably fish this weekend!

Well, word on the street is this:

Henry's Fork - Green Drakes in the Ranch, Brown and Grey Drakes down low, Caddis and PMD's popping all over.  Awesome

South Fork - water at Irwin is 50.5 degrees.  Salmonflies start crawling and hatching around 52 - 54 degrees.  Remember that temperature gauge is at Irwin, not Heise or Lorenzo.  You get the picture.

Teton - clear, warming and fishing.  A little bird told us Salmonflies were buzzing around down low.  Yellow Sallies, Caddis and a few Mayflies are floating around the upper valley.

Enough said - here is some more info!

Have a great weekend!

Leadership Lessons from Fishing Guides!

While most of us anglers are awaiting the new issue of The Drake, Fly Fisherman, the newest Orvis Catalog or Field and Stream to arrive in our mailbox; many of us don't think of Forbes Magazine to be the forerunner of fishing business publications.  Well, you were wrong.

Check out this latest article that covers lessons that we can all learn from the fishing industry and fishing guides:

March Merkin 2012 Report!!!

KEY WEST, Florida Keys — Dr. Greg Smith of Galveston, Texas, caught and released four permit, earning 513 points to win the 2012 March Merkin Permit Tournament that ended March 15. Smith, who was guided by Captain Scott Collins of Marathon, Fla., was named the tournament’s grand champion angler.

Points in the flats-and-fly-only challenge were awarded for releases based on the length of the permit and for tagging the fish. Smith tagged all four of his releases and also was recognized for scoring the tournament’s largest single catch.

“This year the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust and Project Permit, supported by Costa Del Mar, provided special reward tags to be used on the fish,” said tournament organizer Jon Ain. “These fish will entitle the person who recaptures the fish, measures its length and cuts off the tag to call BTT to receive a $100 reward.”

The tournament’s first runner-up was Ricky Ricardo of New York, N.Y. Guided by Captain Scotty Irvine of Key West, Ricardo released one permit to earn 135 points.

Defending champion Mike Dawes of Victor, Idaho, was named second runner-up angler for catching one permit that scored 134 points. His guide was Captain Don Gable of Key West.

Twenty-five permit enthusiasts fished the tournament and released a total of 10 permit. Event proceeds benefited the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust.

Congrats to Mike Dawes and Don Gable!

Henry's Fork: Fishing well.  River open from Box Canyon to Upper Harriman Boundary and Lower Harriman boundary to Ashton.  Vernon downstream to the confluence is also open.  Fishing well, limited dry fly activity.  Best dry fly fishing has been around Warm River/Stone bridge.  Be careful and watch out for spawning redds in the river.  Watch you step!

Why we like to fish with Dry Flies!!!

If this doesn't get you in the mood for dry fly fishing, then you have something wrong with you.  Our friend, Simon Perkins from Pro Outfitters, shows us the fine details of why we like dry fly fishing.

Dry fly fishing should heat up in the next couple of weeks here in the Jackson Hole/Teton Valley area.  Hopefully we don't experience the butt-kicking aspect of our favorite form of our favorite sport.

South Fork Trout Numbers Increase!!!!

A recent Idaho Fish and Game Report shows that the South Fork fish population, even after consecutive years of high flows, continues to increase.  The current fish counts resembled those of the mid 1980s, where the fish population was at its largest and most dense.

“Our estimates are pointing to good fishing to be had this year,” said Brett High, regional fisheries biologist for Idaho Department of Fish and Game. - Now that's what we like to hear!!!
